Are All Omega 3 Supplements
The Same?

As with all types of supplements, there is considerable difference in Omega 3 supplements from different companies. Being able to select the right supplement is important so you can have all the Omega 3 benefits possible. Lower quality supplements will limit the benefits you notice and can also lead to other problems as well.

Omega 3 Supplements

One of the most common problems with low quality fish oil or krill oil supplements is the terrible fishy taste. This is not problematic with good quality supplements, particularly with krill oil. The fishy taste is usually due to oxidation of the oil. This happens when fish oil comes into contact with oxygen in the air. The great news is that krill oil is different in structure and has no fishy aftertaste.

Some krill oil supplements on the market today are not pure Antarctic krill oil. In fact they may have a very small amount of krill oil combined with standard Omega 3 fish oil. These combinations or blends are not as beneficial as pure krill oil but may be more effective than standard fish oil.

Where Do Omega 3 Supplements Come From?

Omega 3 fatty acids are found in both animals and plants. The best source is in krill, which is a small shrimp like marine life. Fish is also a very good supply but only the oil cold water fish like salmon, cod, mackerel, herring, halibut and sardines. Since most people eat fish rarely if ever in their diet taking a supplement is a very good option.

Flax seed, hemp seed and chia seeds are the best plant based source of Omega 3s. However there specific fatty acid from plants is ALA or alpha-linolenic acid. The body has to convert this into DHA and EPA to be used by the body so it is not considered a good source. In addition a lot of the ALA is lost in this chemical reaction, resulting in a lower amount.

Added Benefits

Many of the best supplements on the market are very pure in form. This is particularly true with krill oil that is harvested from very deep, cold waters. In addition krill oil also naturally contains the antioxidant astaxanthin which can help in heart health, joint and muscle repair, anti-aging and getting rid of the free radicals in the body that cause many health problems.

Look for Omega 3 supplements that are organic. Packaging needs to be dark to prevent light from hitting the capsules and reducing their value. It is also important to consider the actual size of the capsules. Some are very small and easy to swallow while others are much larger.
