Krill oil is valuable for kids of all ages because it contains all three forms of omega-3 fatty acids: ALA, EPA and DHA.

When sourced from healthy krill found in Antarctic waters, a supplement of krill oil reduces the risk of metal contamination and other issues commonly associated with consumption of fish oil supplements.

Studies have connected omega-3 fatty acids with improved cognitive functioning and many other aspects of health, so the question isn’t whether your kids need these fatty acids.

The question is how much you should give them and in what form you should deliver it.

Krill Oil Dosage Recommendations from Dr. Sears

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration, the World Health Organization and other agencies routinely suggest recommended daily dosages of various foods for healthy adults and children, but there aren’t so many organizations giving doses specific to healthy children at this time.

One person who has released guidelines is Dr. Sears. In one of his books, he recommends the following krill oil dosage standards:

  • Infants: minimum of 300 mg daily
  • Toddlers (2-3 years old): minimum of 400 mg daily
  • 4 years and up: minimum of 600 mg daily

One way to think about this is how much omega 3-rich fish you should feed your kids each week. If your child is under the age of four, they need to eat approximately 4 ounces of fresh fish two times a week.

Children over the age of four should consume approximately 6 ounces of fresh fish two times a week.

Can Kids Take Supplements?

If you’re concerned about metal exposure through the consumption of fresh fish or your child refuses to eat fish as often as required to get hit their weekly omega-3 fatty acid goal, you may consider giving them a high-quality krill oil supplement.

You may want to check with their doctor first, especially if they have a diagnosed medical condition or are already taking prescription medications.

Many supplements are safe for children and will have their own guidelines for dosage depending on your child’s age.

If your child consumes adequate amounts of whole foods containing omega-3, then they may not need the supplement each week.

It’s a good idea to have a product safe for children on hand just in case you’re unable to serve up the fish two or three times some weeks.

Your doctor may even suggest higher dosages if your child suffers from ADHD, anxiety, depression, bipolar or any other disorder that affects their ability to focus and learn.

Krill and fish oil are often prescribed in addition to other medications, therapies and natural interventions, creating a comprehensive program that supports the child’s ability to function properly on a daily basis.

The World Health Organization has released recommended dosages for adults suffering from a variety of health conditions and mental disorders.

These dosages are generally higher than the recommendations for healthy adults over the age of 18.

Check with your doctor before giving a child a higher dose than recommended on the label.
