Using essential oils for pain relief can be even more effective than many drugs with no side effects.
Pain is something that every one of us deals with at some point or another. Whether it’s acute pain from an injury, muscle spasm or inflammation or chronic pain from conditions like fibromyalgia or arthritis, pain is a part of life. Thankfully, so is pain relief and you don’t have to resort to prescription medication or even over the counter pain relievers in order to get some much needed relief from the pain you’re experiencing.
There are natural alternatives to pain medication which include essential oils which have analgesic, anti-inflammatory and anti-spasmodic effects. The following are some of the most effective essential oils for treating pain – as with any natural remedy, they should be used with caution, since some are not recommended for use by people with certain medical conditions or by expectant mothers.
Sweet Marjoram: Sweet marjoram essential oil has a mild sedative effect and can help to relieve arthritis pain, pain back pain and muscle spasms as well as providing relief from muscle stiffness.Lavender:
Lavender essential oil is well known for its sedative and anti-inflammatory properties. It’s useful for treating muscle and joint pain, headaches and muscle spasms.
Chamomile: An essential oil with potent anti-inflammatory effects, chamomile is great for relieving lower back pain, headaches, PMS, muscle spasms and headaches.
Eucalyptus: This essential oil is an analgesic and anti-inflammatory which is effective against nerve and muscle pain. However, it should only be used in small quantities for safety’s sake.
Rosemary: Rosemary isn’t just a good thing to have in the kitchen – as an essential oil, it has anti-spasmodic and analgesic properties which make it an excellent choice for treating headaches, joint pain, backaches and other muscle pain.
Ginger: Ginger essential oil is a wonderful natural remedy for chronic arthritic and rheumatic pain, can help to improve mobility and relieve muscle and joint pain.
It’s important to remember that many essential oils for pain relief should not be applied directly to the skin. Instead, dilute them with neutral oils like almond oil or olive oil. Use about 5 drops essential oil to 1 tbsp of neutral oil before use. You can also add a few drops of essential oil to a warm bath and take a soak to relieve aches and pains – this is an especially good way to relieve arthritis pain and muscle pains and spasms, since the hot water will also promote muscle relaxation.
You can also use diluted essential oils as a massage oil or for a headache, apply to the temples. You can also relieve headaches and other pain by simply smelling essential oils; just place a few drops onto a cloth and use this simple aromatherapy technique for pain relief.
