Using Essential Oils for Acid Reflux to Treat it Naturally

Essential Oils for Acid Reflux

You might be surprised how many people find that using essential oils for acid reflux is really effective.

Acid reflux, also known as Gerd, occurs when your stomach acids backtrack and re-enter the esophagus during the digestion process. This may happen when you eat spicy or fatty foods on occasion or it may become a constant irritation that interferes with your ability to eat comfortably. The end result is usually heartburn, and you may experience more intense symptoms if you lie down right after eating. While there are many over-the-counter products designed to ease the discomfort of acid reflux, they may not always work and they’re often pricey.

Essential Oils for Acid Reflux

You should talk to your doctor about adjustments to your diet that may help eliminate acid reflux. In the meantime, there are some essential oils for acid relux that may help ease the symptoms.

  • Peppermint Essential Oil – Add one drop of peppermint oil, half a teaspoon of apple cider vinegar, and about a teaspoon of honey to a glass of warm water and drink before your meal. Peppermint oil is often used to calm stomachaches with a variety of causes and will help keep your digestive system moving. This is a good home remedy to enjoy in the morning.
  • Ginger Essential Oil – You can make a natural tea by mixing two or three drops of ginger oil with hot water, allowing it to cool before drinking. This works well when taken before you eat. Ginger is often used as an alternative to aspirin and can protect your stomach from ulcers, and you don’t want to consume it within a couple hours of taking aspirin.
  • Lemon and Wild Orange Essential Oils – Combine one or both of these citrus oils with a carrier oil like coconut oil. Massage the oil over your chest and throat for external relief. You can do this with peppermint and eucalyptus oils as well, but make sure that it is properly diluted with the carrier oil. You may also mix lemon essential oil with water and drink. A combination of warm water, honey, and wild orange essential oil is often soothing as well.
  • Marjoram Essential Oil – While this isn’t the first pick for most people, marjoram does have soothing qualities that are comforting when you’re suffering from heartburn. This oil is also used to stop muscle spasms, so you will find many ways to put it to good use if you want to invest in a bottle.

Notice that honey and apple cider vinegar are mentioned in these essential oil heartburn recipes. Both of these common kitchen ingredients are known for helping with heartburn and other digestive issues. Some people drink apple cider vinegar shots every morning to help fight off ulcers, gallstones, and a variety of additional stomach troubles.

Consider essential oils a natural way to treat acid reflux quickly. If you have chronic heartburn that doesn’t respond well to essential oils or many over-the-counter products, you should talk to your doctor. You want to eliminate more serious medical conditions that are sometimes related to chronic acid reflux.
