There is growing research for the use of CBD oil for anxiety. 

CBD oil is getting credit for curing just about everything these days.

There’s anecdotal evidence that it can ease your depression, cure your insomnia, relieve pain and inflammation, and even clear up your acne.

Many people are now using CBD oil for anxiety as well, but is it really worth your consideration?

We looked into the research to see if there’s any evidence that CBD is a potential solution for anxiety.

Understanding CBD Oil

CBD stands for cannabidiol, which is a chemical property extracted from cannabis plants.

While research is connecting it to some medical and health benefits, it doesn’t deliver the intoxicating high that is associated with marijuana.

CBD oil products are either extracted from hemp or various strains of marijuana plants.

If you want to relieve anxiety with CBD but not risk the high, make sure you buy products sourced only from high-quality hemp plants.

Those products should contain no THC, which is another cannabinoid that’s responsible for the high that comes from marijuana.

Products sourced from marijuana may contain a small amount of THC even if it’s not on the label.

If you’re looking for solid scientific evidence that proves CBD oil is an effective treatment for anxiety, you’ll have to keep waiting.

Research into the benefits of CBD oil is still rather new, and some medical conditions receive more attention than others.

There have been some pre-clinical studies that show there’s promise for anxiety sufferers, but there isn’t much clinical research in humans to prove it without a doubt.

The good news is that small studies have shown that CBD oil is a great relaxation tool that can lower stress levels and reduce physical signs of generalized anxiety.

For instance, it may lower your heart rate before you step on stage for a big speech.

There is some research to show it may help with social anxiety, seasonal affective disorder, and PTSD, but research is still needed into other types of anxiety and to deepen findings on these types.

There’s also some research that shows CBD oil may help with conditions that may contribute to heightened anxiety.

For instance, it may help you sleep better so that sleep deprivation doesn’t lead to more stress and anxiety during the day.

There is also a growing body of evidence that it reduces inflammation and can help with pain, which can have an impact on anxiety for people who suffer from chronic pain as a result of inflammation.

Where does that leave us? Does the lack of substantial scientific evidence mean you shouldn’t give CBD oil a shot? Not necessarily.

What research we do have points to positive results and gives anxiety sufferers a lot of hope.

As more research is completed in the future, the scientific proof is likely to surface.

For now, it doesn’t hurt to give high-quality, pure CBD oil a chance.

That’s especially true if you suffer from extreme anxiety that interferes with your daily life and you haven’t found another treatment that works well without uncomfortable side effects.

CBD Oil and Your Anxiety Treatment Plan

Just don’t think of CBD oil as the only solution available for your anxiety.

Even if you find it helps, you may need to combine it with a well-developed treatment plan to get severe or chronic anxiety under control.

For instance, you may try CBD oil plus any of the following natural anxiety remedies:

  • Guided meditation
  • Eliminate caffeine
  • Exercise
  • Deep breathing
  • Dedicated sleep schedule
  • Healthy eating

If you take prescription anxiety medication, talk to your doctor before adding CBD oil.

Make sure there are no potential interactions, and never wean yourself off a medication if you think the CBD oil is working.

There are some severe side effects that come with the elimination of many prescription anxiety medications, and you don’t want to make yourself sick.

How much CBD oil you take at a time and how often you use it will depend on a variety of factors, including:

  • Form of Delivery – Fast results are often shorter lived. Some of the most effective forms of CBD are oral formulas that deliver consistent results throughout the day. You may feel that immediate kick of benefits that comes from a vaporizer, but you should have more benefits for generalized anxiety that occurs on a routine basis. On the other hand, a vaporizer may help if your anxiety hits in certain circumstances and isn’t always an issue. We’ll talk more about different ways to take CBD oil below.
  • Absorption – When you see a package stating how much CBD is in an oil, that refers to the amount infused in the product. It doesn’t mean that your body will absorb the full amount each time you take the product. Every body is unique in some ways, but you can improve your absorption rate by taking your oil with a high-fat snack. Try to find healthy fats like nuts to break the oil down and make it easier for your body to use.
  • Type and Extent of Anxiety – Some users may need CBD oil for anxiety on a daily basis while others use it occasionally. It comes down to how you experience anxiety and what type of results you want to achieve.

Always start by taking a small amount of CBD oil.

Even if you’ve used it before, you want to make sure you don’t experience a negative reaction to a new product before taking a higher dose.

Wait at least six hours after taking an oral product or two hours after using a vaporizer before you decide that you need to increase your dosage.

There’s no guaranteed dosage of CBD oil that will work for everyone, so start with a low dose and gradually increase over time.

You will eventually rule the product out as something that just doesn’t work for you or discover a dose that works well.

That’s a good option if you suffer from anxiety that hits out of the blue or occurs only in select circumstances. Inhaling CBD right before or just after the anxiety hits may provide fast relief.
  • Oils – You can place drops of CBD oil directly under your tongue or use it in your own baked goods and foods. Placing it under the tongue can provide fast results and may last a bit longer than vaporized CBD oil.
  • Edibles – Gummies and other candies are among the most popular CBD oil edibles, but there are baked goods and other options out there. The problem is it’s difficult to determine exactly how much CBD oil is in these products. Many also contain THC and are designed to deliver a high, so learn about the source of the CBD before taking edibles.
  • Topical Solutions – Lotions and creams are applied directly to the skin and are commonly used for acne, rashes and other skin problems. Rubbing these lotions over your hands or dabbing it on your temples and other pulse points may help ease stress and relax your body and mind, which could have a short-term impact on your anxiety. Consider natural lotions and creams that contain soothing essential oils like lavender.

The simplest way to take CBD oil is to buy a high-quality oil and place drops under your tongue.

You can also add the drops to smoothies and other treats, but you may delay absorption.

Once you find something that works for you, using it consistently may help keep your anxiety in check over the long term.

Most people don’t consume enough CBD oil for this concern to become a real issue, but always check with your doctor rather than assuming.

If you’re using pure CBD oil derived only from hemp, you don’t have to worry about THC content showing up on a drug screen or delivering a high that interferes with your daily life.

If you shop for your CBD oil from a dispensary, always ask for pure hemp products because many dispensary oils are derived from marijuana plants.

Putting CBD Oil to the Test

If you suffer from anxiety and haven’t found a safe treatment that’s reliable and effective over time, CBD oil is something new you may try.

Make sure you select high-quality CBD oil from a reputable manufacturer.

As more companies jump into the market, that may become more difficult.

The following tips from Consumer Reports will help:

  • Determine the source of the hemp or cannabis used to create every CBD oil you consider buying. The best hemp sources come from Colorado because the state does spot checks on products. Product grown and processed in the United States is always a safer bet than hemp grown abroad.
  • Check online to see if a product’s certificate of analysis or COA is available. It will tell you about potential contaminants in the oil.
  • Determine how much CBD is in the product. Some companies openly list this information on the package, but take it a step further and research online. Some CBD products have been caught including much less CBD than they advertise.

As the CBD oil market becomes more competitive, more companies will submit their products to quality testing to prove their quality. Government regulation may also come into play in the future. For now, do your research and make sure you select the purest product available so that your results are maximized.
